Observe and Adapt

My buddy Christine Woodside shared this with me in an email this week, “A scientist friend told me that Darwin, when talking about evolution, didn't actually say ‘survival of the fittest’, but ‘survival of the most adaptable.’”

After spring break, we made changes to the Social Distance Academy schedule and everyone liked them. But, once we were in the swing of things, I could feel myself getting annoyed with the children’s attention level at certain times during the day. Do I really have to change things again? Can't I just force my schedule on the group? That feels sooo much easier.

I can easily observe and get my knickers in a bunch. I can even observe and try to control the situation. But corona is asking me again and again: Can I observe and adapt to what’s best for the group?

So far, I feel like we’re adapting the crap out of this thing. But, ya know, our constant adapting doesn’t feel like just survival. When I change something and do what’s most beneficial, not just for me, but for the whole team, I truly feel like a qualified, capable, mature adult. Adaptation feels like an opportunity to thrive. However Corona—I’m just about adapted-out over here, so the faster you can run your course, the better chance these little people have at making it out safely.

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives,
not the most intelligent that survives.
It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”

Charles Darwin

Awe, thanks Bill. I think mini-versions of 'the hell with this' are allowing me to persevere.
More 'the hell with IT', rather than 'the hell with this'.
Kids have been playing video games for 2 hours? The hell with it.
I've ignored my children for 4 hours? The hell with it.
I don't feel like teaching today? The hell with it.
I didn't call that person back? The hell with it.
Next week, I'm hoping to post about what thriving looks like during COVID-19.
Here's a hint, a LOT different than it did 7 weeks ago.
Thank you SO much for your kind comment, it means so much to get love and support.
(And Bill is a WONDERFUL teacher everyone!!! He taught one of the kids favorite classes so far on The 7 Steps of Sales. Yahooo!)

Stay strong. You and your team have been setting a wonderful example for everyone. To give in now to the temptation to say the hell with this would be so sad. Keep adapting and inspiring :)

Catwoman—how did you know I needed a pep talk? I'll keep reading this as we pull into week seven.
Week five and six felt a lot like running out of gas.
Thank you for this. Love.

You got this Mags... We got this.
We can do this. It’s what We all needed, We were all to far out In the busyness. It’s time to look inward, take care of the inside, So we can take better care of the outside

Oh my goodness Dan, that's EXACTLY how I feel—wrong. And because I'm more sensitive these days, 'wrong' hurts.
Thank you for commenting and thank you for reminding me that 'NOT adapting is the bigger mistake'.
