Faithing Over Shaming

January 31, 2020  •  5 Comments

When it comes to having faith, I’ve convinced myself that I almost effortlessly embrace God’s plan. My ability to see unplanned things as happening for me and not to me is a muscle I’ve been working to strengthen over the past 20 years. I’ve conditioned myself to see a traffic jam, canceled plans, even a job loss, as something to accept and see opportunity in. BUT—when a family member makes me late, I can go from 0-60 in no time flat. This week I realized that my response looks a lot less like faithing and a lot more like shaming.

I don’t have to delve too deep to understand that the closer someone is to me the more ability they have to agitate me. However, the facts remain—family members are always going to make mistakes, and they’re sure as schmidt consistently going to make choices that inconvenience me. I don't want my response to be exasperation. I don’t want to make others feel bad about themselves. But I know the only way I’m going to be able to shift my behavior is by recognizing that God is as much at play in these happenings as everything else in my life.

This one might always be a struggle for me, but it's truly worth the struggle. I know how amazing it feels when someone offers me compassion through my mistakes rather than shame. I'd love to offer that gift to the people I care about most. And this photo is a nice reminder to me that I'm trying to live my life as just another apple, not the crow.

Mags
Rachel, thanks so much for your comment. I too love "the pass" so much that it reminds me to offer it to others.
I really appreciate you checking in~

Thanks for this reminder, I too like when I'm offered a pass not shame. So hard to be perfect and live to expectations, it is nice when not only do I get a pass but when I can offer it back. Thanks for your kind creative sharing that brings light to what happens more often than not.

Dan, the challenge for me is following through with a natural consequence for their actions. I end up 'saving them' and being Martyr-Mom rather than just coming up with an, "If I have to take time to drive you to school, then, please plan on cleaning the mudroom after practice today," kind of thing.
Good talk--this was helpful.

Kate, you're not the first person who has mentioned having a word for the year. "Surrender" sounds like a perfect choice. I'll try to remember that the next time one of the little buggers messes with my schedule, thanks!

Listen, Mags, I feel the same. I'm more about degrees, or rather, selective. I just have a couple of MAJOR things in my life where I have difficulty making the shift from happening FOR me instead of TO me. And funny enough, those places snag the heck out of me....My 2020 word is surrender, not surprisingly....

So true! Recognizing "things" happen and I need to deal with them is much easier than applying that same thinking to my family... but if I can keep this in mind and see them as the same... maybe I'll have a chance to not get so worked up ... probably not...but maybe!
