Three Day Rule

February 22, 2019  •  4 Comments

One of my favorite pastimes used to be letting my husband know when he hurt my feelings. Of course, it never crossed my mind to take into consideration the extenuating circumstances of the day that might have caused my feelings to be more easily hurt i.e., sleeping through my alarm, a tough exchange with one of the children, hunger, hormones, etc. It was just, You hurt my feelings and now you’re going to hear about it.

Then, I was taught to wait.

If G-Man wrinkles my knickers now, I wait. If after several days I still remember the knickers I was wearing and what he did to wrinkle them, it’s likely something we should talk about. (Another reason weekly date night comes in handy—things don’t pile up.)

As you might imagine, the time lapse allows for a much calmer, well thought-out, loving exchange. I also think my feelings can be honored more when they’re not being reported daily (or hourly, depending on the week). Taking time helps me decipher the distinction between general crankiness and a concern we genuinely need to discuss.

Do you let people know how you’re feeling the moment you feel it? Or maybe you rarely let people know how you feel?
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.

Dawn,
I completely agree, this stuff takes years. And the behavior is a muscle I have to use in order for it to get stronger.
Thank you for taking the time to write~

Synne,
You bring up a great point—some of us need to shut our mouths, some of us need to open our mouths.
Thanks for taking the time to acknowledge the other side~

Sarah,
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful comment...It reminds me of that quote, "Put down the magnifying glass and pick up a mirror."

Thanks for the reminder of this important practice! Pausing for three days (even three hours can at times suffice) allows me time to reflect about why I felt hurt or was triggered. This often leads to the recognition that it was more my perception of the situation rather than what actually took place. My “emotional brain” has an uncanny ability to make mountains out of mole hills so sorting out what’s what in that waiting period really helps to put things into perspective and create more peace and understanding.

Great suggestions. I need to practice this more mindfully. I was SO closed up when I was married that I let things fester until my boiling point. I think I may have tried to over correct this. You have definitely given me something to think about.

I’ve learned to wait..but it took me many years. Things just don’t seem that important in 2-3 days and if they still are nagging me I do address them. My knee jerk reaction is still there but I’ve learned to control her! You are very insightful at a much younger age than I!
