Less Opinions = More Happy

There was once a time when I voiced my thoughts on everything. It was suggested to me that if I wanted more serenity in my life, I could try to have less opinions. Novel idea. I gave it a try and, in Sinatra’s words, Oh, by gosh, by golly, it worked. Choosing to take less of a stance on things, big and small, magically created more peace in my life.

'Tis the season for opinions. This week, I’d like to remind myself that I love everyone’s Christmas lights, no matter how sparse or grand. I love all of my family members, no matter how much their quirks get kicked up during the month of December. I love all my children, despite the fact that they have the energy to bounce off the walls, yet lack the energy to put a dish in the dishwasher. I love my husband, even though he feels compelled to stuff an 18’ Christmas tree in our sunroom every year.

I'm not embracing everything because I feel forced to, I'm doing it because it makes me happier when I come from a place of love rather than a place of judgement. It’s all good. It’s ALL good. And the less opinions I have, the better it seems to get.

Thank you for your kind message and for sharing the great wisdom of Grandpa Campagna—I feel so blessed to have known him. And I have a lot of Italian friends who seem to marvel at their family's ability to always have words, not the other way around. It only speaks more to what an incredibly special man your father was and how much of an effect he had on creating all of you. Such a loving bunch. Merry Christmas to you and Dan!

It really made me smile,

Your mention of less voiced thoughts on everything can certainly be a tough task to take on in life. The formula you mentioned ,
Less talk equals serenity has been one of my meditation threads for a long time.

My sweet Dad used to say “ senza parole”,
Italian for without words .He often used this phrase when something came up at home , at his job or with our hectic large family life.
Tossing his hands in the air, declaring “ senza parole !” and he would leave it at that .No more discussion, no additional comments as sometimes saying nothing was the best response.
When he died we had made copies of a small note he had used every day of his life.
It was a simple index card, written with The Serenity Prayer and a quote he had picked up at a St Mary retreat.
The quote said to keep your soul in silence and avoid excessive talking at home, work and on the phone.I think with six children at home he put this advice to good use .

Good advice !
