Gratitude Challenge

After last week's post Shake It Up, when I was essentially bracing myself as if I were about to be hit by lightning in anticipation of school coming to a close, I was struck by a force of a completely different variety—Gratitude. I think God wants me to go all in on gratitude this summer.

Last Friday I started a 70-day gratitude challenge. For the 70 days of summer (yes, I’m counting), I’m going to write down (an important part of the practice) five things I’m grateful for every day. I also like the suggestion to try to come up with new things every day.

When I shake up my schedule, one thing that can overwhelm me is the thought of adding things to my day. Because of this, I can be reluctant to invite even positive things into my life. My hope is that focussing on everything that’s going right with my day rather than focussing on everything that’s not, is going to be worth the time I invest in it and yield huge dividends. So I'm going all in. Gratitude, “Mama needs a new pair of shoes and a new attitude.”

Do you get overwhelmed at the thought of doing ‘one more thing’? Are there any healthy practices you want to share in the comment section below that bring you peace and are worth every second you spend on them? Or maybe you could share this post with someone who is going through a tough time and might benefit from a little focus on what’s going right in their lives.

Love this practice. An extension of it is our “grateful” at dinner time. Each of my family states one thing for which s/he is grateful. This helps (at least for me and hopefully for my hormonal tweens) to break from the challenges of the day and re-focus on the positive. And sometimes, I think it has swayed us toward a more harmonious meal. Sometimes...

Great suggestion. I'm trying to figure out a way to not overschedule myself. I can't seem to crack that code, but I'm not going to stop trying. Thanks for your feedback Meg.

I also got an email from a reader who has been gratitude journalling for years. We'll see how long I can keep it up. I have already seen a difference throughout my day. I feel like I'm more aware of what's going to make it into the journal at night and I try to bask in my gratitude for whatever it is while it's happening.

Mags- I will add that taking a selfcare break in the middle of an overscheduled day or over scheduled mind creates more space. It's paradoxical. And it works.

Someone just shared a private comment about being too busy, but still "dragging" the craft bag around. Thank you for sharing your experience. I love that you keep that bag with you. I was just being reminded by a good friend that it's INTENTION that matters. So while you might not always get to it, you're always reminding yourself where your passion lies. And once life allows, you'll absolutely return to it....and it will be waiting for you.
